Tunings
I make use of a lot of altered and open tunings. These are challenging and great fun but a word of warning is in order. Be careful when using altered tunings on your instrument as some of these tunings combined with medium and/or heavy gauge strings exert tremendous force on your guitar and can damage it.

When I perform my two main guitars are typically tuned (low to high) in DADGAD on the cutaway F32C and in Open C, CGCGCE on the F32. My National is either in Open D, DADF#AD or Open G with a unison G on the bottom, GGDGBE. Note: If you are going to try a unison G on the bottom, don't just tune up your E string but re-string the sixth string with a lighter gauge such as that used for your fifth string. I also use variants of these tunings such as DGDGAD, CGDGAD, double-drop D DADGBD and CGCGCD. Occasionally I'll use a Kyser Drop D capo (it capos strings 5 through 1 leaving 6 open or turn it around and capo 6 through 2 leaving 1 open) and I find it a great way to get into some tunings that would not be practical any other way.

On "Finally Home" the following tunings (low to high) were used:
  • No Mercy From The Bells - CGCGGD Full capo at second fret
  • Waiting On The Boatman - DGDGAD
  • The Return - Open C, CGCGCE
  • Canterbury Hill - DADGAD
  • Here There And Back Again - CGDGAD Partial capo (Kyser Drop D) at 5th fret leaving low C open
  • Souvenirs - CGCGCD
  • Afternoon In Chiapas - Open D, DADF#AD
  • The Widow And The Storm - DADGAD Full capo at second fret
  • Finally Home - DADGAD
  • When They Come To Lay Me Down - CGCGCE Partial capo (Kyser Drop D) at 4th fret leaving high E open.
